New album review (05.09)

A new review for Robert's debut album, Distance, has surfaced on the internet blog, Olga Loves YuЯi. Read the transcript below.

I’m not into bells and whistles – a good song doesn’t need them. When Robert O’Conner asked Yuri to review his CD, Distance, I was looking forward to it. His letter and self promotion was interesting and commendable. My musical tastes tend to be simple and clean music - which might surprise some of Yuri's readers.

So, I’ve been listening to Robert’s CD, and here are my humble opinions.

Spend the Night and Wonderful Accident– Poetic and I’m reminded of a Robin Thicke ballad.

Destination Anywhere – By far, this is the catchiest of the tracks.

How Many Times (Can We Say Goodbye) – I really liked the words to this one. It’s a good song to wallow in when you feel bad. And it has banjoes! I love banjoes!

Killing Kind, by Shelby Lynne – a duet with Aziza El Messaoudi – Love this song, but I could have done without the duet.

Left You Behind and Damage to the Heart – Yuri and I both thought of Justin Timberlake when we heard these tracks.

I’ll Be the King – I’m sorry, but I can’t get beyond the electronic flair to this one – it distracts me from the song.

Tonight – Another sweet, poetic song with a really nice guitar base.

Ten Year’s Time – This is one that could muscle its way into my head and I’d be humming. It’s a fuller song with strings – which I really like.

Robert’s strong suit is his writing. His songs are well thought out and he has a lot to say. Like I said in the beginning, I like some styles more than others, and this CD is not a one trick pony – so I liked some more than others.

Here are my recommendations –

Check out Destination Anywhere, Killing Kind, How Many Times (Can We Say Goodbye) and Ten Year’s Time.
