Robert has told followers on Twitter that he is writing his second album with "the American market in mind".
The singer recently said in an interview that he intends of shifting his focus from the Irish market after his debut album was promoted exclusively in his home country.
Robert has spoken for the first time about turning his back on the Irish music industry, his recent experience on a major film set and why he wants to get in a meeting with producer-of-the-moment, RedOne. Read the interview below.
Robert, it's been almost a year since our last talk, what’s happening with your career? I obviously played a number of gigs in Dublin with the band, though the last one was in January. We have sort of concluded that there’s no market for my music here at the moment, and although I do intend on moving the sound in a different direction for my next album, I still don’t believe Ireland is the place to be when trying to get a music project like this off the ground, it's all about who you know and fitting into a specific type, they don't know what to do with me here!So does that mean there will be no more gigs in Ireland?
Not necessarily. I won’t be doing any more gigs directly promoting Distance. I’m still in touch with some of the great musicians I was playing with, and some new ones, and if a great gig or a support offer came up I’d probably take it. Realistically, I have thought about going to Asia, going to Germany, you name it, everyone has had an idea where I would fit in, and right now I’m hearing a lot of “go to the states” and in fairness that’s where Adult Contemporary ballads can really work if you get the right radio support. Will you be taking the album to America then?
I am toying with the idea of going to the states in a couple of months and checking out the situation. I have hit a brick wall here, and when I look at the artists that I am inspired by, like Jem for instance, they sort of shifted to the states when nothing was happening in their home country…in my gut it feels like the right thing, you've got to make yourself truly uncomfortable to achieve success I think, get away from home and all your comforts and luxuries. What else have you been doing?
I’ve finally finished journalism at college so I have a qualification there to fall back on. I don’t see myself going any further down the academic road at this point, it’s make or break for the music in a lot of ways, I mean, it’s been four years since I recorded “Ten Years Time”, and yet I have never ventured outside of Ireland due to my college commitments. I’ve been doing some extras work for film and TV, I’ve just finished working on a film called Leap Year with Amy Adams as the lead actor, that was a really fun experience, and it all happened in Dublin and Wicklow which was convenient for me.Has being on set made you want to revisit your acting roots?
You know, I’ve done theatre as a child, I’ve done a few acting courses here and there, but again in Ireland there’s no real film industry. Unless you want to be on Fair City or something, you need to leave the country. Jonathan Rhys Meyers told me that a few years ago and he was right, and if I’m going to leave the country, which I would say is almost a certainty, it will be for music, but I wouldn’t say no to an acting role either, combination careers are the way forward! Will Distance see a release outside of Ireland?
Essentially it is available in most countries, digitally or to buy online, but as a physical release, I can’t really say. I would love to promote it properly in the states or Europe, but I think the moment may have passed for that album now, I want to record and release new material quite quickly. Will this new material be a departure from your debut?
Yes. The idea is to sell records and I didn’t do that the first time around so really it’s time to change and I am very much looking at what’s happening in the charts on both sides of the Atlantic which is something I was ignoring when recording the first album. I didn’t care for any of that, I was just so obsessed with creating something that I felt represented me well. If I wasn’t under pressure to sell a single copy I’d go and record another album of mellowed-out pop, like I’d love to work with Pierre Marchand or Lester Mendez, that’s the type of music I’m listening to at home and loving, but that’s not the key to commercial success at the moment, at least not outside of America, so I suppose get RedOne on the phone and we’ll make something infectious for the clubs…and send me into irreversible debt!
A year on from his debut album release, Robert announced today on Twitter that he will release his second album in 2010.

A new review for Robert's debut album, Distance, has surfaced on the website Musicreview. Read the transcript below.
Robert O’Connor singer songwriter from Dublin, Ireland unlike many singer songwriters Robert has produced his songs to the highest quality. Distance has 10 tracks of very interesting listening with a broad range of musical arrangements from both the pop and R-n-B rhythms scene, he has put down some great tracks on this album like “Ten years time” it’s got everything going for it, the song lacks no boundaries and it has all the commercial qualities of becoming something great just like Robert he has a very smooth voice and its working for him on Distance, excellent stuff.Review by T. Halpin
RANK: ***** 5 out of 6

A new review for Robert's debut album, Distance, has surfaced on the internet blog, Olga Loves YuЯi. Read the transcript below.
I’m not into bells and whistles – a good song doesn’t need them. When Robert O’Conner asked Yuri to review his CD, Distance, I was looking forward to it. His letter and self promotion was interesting and commendable. My musical tastes tend to be simple and clean music - which might surprise some of Yuri's readers. So, I’ve been listening to Robert’s CD, and here are my humble opinions.
Spend the Night and Wonderful Accident– Poetic and I’m reminded of a Robin Thicke ballad.
Destination Anywhere – By far, this is the catchiest of the tracks.
How Many Times (Can We Say Goodbye) – I really liked the words to this one. It’s a good song to wallow in when you feel bad. And it has banjoes! I love banjoes!
Killing Kind, by Shelby Lynne – a duet with Aziza El Messaoudi – Love this song, but I could have done without the duet.
Left You Behind and Damage to the Heart – Yuri and I both thought of Justin Timberlake when we heard these tracks.
I’ll Be the King – I’m sorry, but I can’t get beyond the electronic flair to this one – it distracts me from the song.
Tonight – Another sweet, poetic song with a really nice guitar base.
Ten Year’s Time – This is one that could muscle its way into my head and I’d be humming. It’s a fuller song with strings – which I really like.
Robert’s strong suit is his writing. His songs are well thought out and he has a lot to say. Like I said in the beginning, I like some styles more than others, and this CD is not a one trick pony – so I liked some more than others.
Here are my recommendations –
Check out Destination Anywhere, Killing Kind, How Many Times (Can We Say Goodbye) and Ten Year’s Time.

Adrian Clarkson at Robert's official site recently caught up with Robert to talk about his search for musicians, the importance of chart positions, and his plans for the future. Read the transcript below.
Robert, it's been almost two months since you released your debut album, what have you been up to since? I was actually busier before the album was released than I am now. Since the promotional campaign was limited to live performances in Dublin, it hasn’t been too hectic. Right now I’m looking at various territories and figuring the markets that I can promote my music in. I’m also looking for a manager, three years later! How do you feel the reaction has been from the public, and from the media?
I think the problem really is that much of the public are not aware of me, and of my music, and this is obviously down to promotion. Luckily, all of the shops here in Ireland carried Distance, but really, you’re just another CD on the shelves unless you’re on TV and radio. But those who have responded have responded well. HMV for instance gave me a fantastic review, and to me that was enough to say “right…onwards and upwards”.Do chart positions matter to you?
I’d like to say they don’t but of course they do. Essentially they gage how successful you are in terms of how much people are enjoying your music, but as I said before, it’s difficult to get an album into the charts that isn’t in the public consciousness. It's frustrating, but you just have to keep thinking of different ways to attract attention from the public. You are playing an acoustic gig at Radio City in Dublin, wasn't your acoustic gig at Whelan's supposed to be your final one?
Yes it was supposed to be my last acoustic gig. I want to go back out with a bigger set up - adding percussion and bass to the guitar backing. I’m not trying to compete with bands, but I’ve done the acoustic thing, and I feel that it was the right thing to do to start out that way, I can never be accused of using backing tracks of lacking the ability to sing live, and that was the first thing I wanted to get out of the way. Radio City was a venue I hadn’t played, it was offered and I wasn’t willing to turn it down I'm going to play it.How far along are you in the musician selection process for your band?
Well I have a percussionist and a number of guitarists who are interested and over the next two weeks we’ll be getting together to see what we can come up with. I want to change the set from the acoustic shows, but obviously I’ll still be performing songs from Distance. I can’t find a bassist, so if there’s anyone based in Dublin with some level of dedication and of course talent, call me!What about Distance, will there be any further promotion for the album?
There’s another single in the pipeline pencilled for August. We’re going with “Killing Kind” after quite a bit of discussion about which track would be next. It’s funny, the first two singles were very much evident to me, but now that the album is released, I feel like people’s response to the tracks is influencing, and confusing me. I probably wouldn’t have chosen “Killing Kind” myself, since I didn’t write it and of course there’s the factor of it being compared to Shelby Lynne’s version which makes me rather uncomfortable since I admire her so much as an artist.

CASTLEKNOCK singer and heart-throb Robert O'Connor is on the crest of a wave. His debut album, Distance - just released through Universal - is flying off the shelves. A former model, Robert has been described as an Irish James Blunt, who is wooing fans with his own lyrics. He's a welcome fresh voice on the singer-songwriter scene. But the nicest thing, however, is that he still has his feet firmly on the ground and isn't fazed in the least by all the hype and attention he's suddenly receiving.
Robert's debut album, Distance, currently features as one of the 'Recommended New Releases' at HMV Grafton Street (Dublin).
In an accompanying review, HMV said:
Robert describes his debut album as “35-minutes of questions about life and love”. His honesty does not stop in his press statements but continues all through this album. Ranging from the tongue-in-cheek to the sorrowfully beautiful, it's no surprise to hear he's been tipped as Dublin's next big thing in songwriting

Young Irish singer-songwriter ROBERT O'CONNOR will perform his double A-side debut single Spend The Night/Ten Years Time at the Performing Artists Trust Society show in Dublin on November 13. The single from the multi-talented 20-year-old was released last Friday.
A column entitled Going Places, written by Robert O'Connor, features in the Evening Herald 'It's Friday' supplement today. Read the transcript below.
Tonight
To tell the truth, I lead a bit of a double life. During the week I have college, which I've just started this year. I also have to squeeze in recordings sessions sometimes, but when Friday comes, usually I'm totally free.In the afternoon, I sit in Moda Cafe in Rathmines with a couple of friends from college relaxing over coffee and then I head off to do an hour's workout at my gym in the city centre.
Normally I wouldn't make a habit of going to one particular place on a certain night, but recently I've been to Port House on South William Street at least every second week! Port House (not Porter House, but owned by the same company) is a tapas/wine bar where the staff are extremely friendly without being annoying, the food is fantastically fresh (and original) and the wines are divine, even the house Chardonnay.
It's always packed by 7pm, so myself and my friend Shane, a music student in Trinity, head in for around 6pm. After a couple of bottles of wine and a few bites, we'll either decide to stay the night or move on to meet other friends.
This part of the night doesn't have a specific regime - sometimes we'll go to AKA or Cocoon, both of which feature minimalist decor, the most relaxing Electronica music and perfect waiting staff!
Saturday
I rise a little later than usual and often head into town for some retail therapy. My first stop is Brown Thomas, where I used to work during the summers. I'm not a big fashion follower; I'd rather buy select items, where there isn't a hundred of the same thing available.I bought a YSL blazer in Alias Tom om Duke Street two years ago and it's really stood the test of time. It was worth every cent and also there were only something like three made!
Ralph Lauren and Gant are my old reliables for casual everyday wear. If I don't go into town and I want to shop, I'll go to Dundrum. I'm really into Zara and Massimo Dutti at the moment - they create the runway look while retaining a low price tag. I also love to browse around Tower Records - they have it all in every area, from DVDs to imports and every magazine.
Sometimes, after shopping, I'll meet a friend for a late afternoon drink at the Bailey or Dakota. Unless there's something worth coming out for, I'll stay in on a Saturday night.
Sunday
I usually spend Sunday with my family, and as I'm an only child, it's quite nice to just catch up with each other. My mum is an excellent cook and makes a great traditional Sunday dinner.Sometimes, after dinner, we'll visit relatives. We've never been the sort of family to only see each other on special occasions, so I'm used to this and I enjoy it!
In the evening, I'll often take in a film with a friend. I tend to go to Cineworld on Parnell Street, as it's central. Despite my efforts, I always end up going to bed late on a Sunday night, mostly due to the fact that I've to organise myself so that I'm ready to start the week all over again!

The very talented Robert O'Connor releases his debut single in the UK on 30 October 2006. The single features "Spend The Night", a stunning and touching traditional but modern soul tinged pop ballad that reminds us slightly of a cross between George Michael and Ben Folds. The single also features the timeless pop gem that is "Ten Years Time". Robert's voice is soulful, clear, emotive and sweet as an angel while maintaining a natural strength. Dreamy, melodic and heavenly this is pure pop heaven.

What made you decide to start a career in music, tell us a bit about your history to date?
I asked my mum for a keyboard for my birthday at the age of 7. A year before that I had started in Billy Barry stage school in Ireland – it’s the biggest and most well known of it’s kind here – sort of like Ireland’s answer to Sylvia Young. When I got the keyboard for my birthday I realised I’d need lessons. I started lessons at 8 and continued until I was 19. I knew all along at the back of my mind that a career in music was my ideal, and I knew that there were lots of different areas within the industry, it was just a matter of finding the right one for me. I was a keyboard teacher at one point a few years ago too – so that was a whole different career in music. I enjoyed it, but I knew that I wanted to perform, and that distracted me. I believe if you’re not 100% in something, you might as well not bother at all.
Who or what are your influences?
George Michael is the artist that first comes to mind. I love his passion; his vocals are so delicate and incredibly emotive. Also the fact that he’s written the vast majority of his lyrics is a big plus – I feel that when you listen to a singer, singing their own songs, telling their own story, there’s nothing quite like it. Dido is another major influence on me. I like her simple story telling. Songs like “Thank You”, “Here With Me” and “White Flag” are just so raw and true-to-life. I also adore Alanis Morrisette. The detail in her songs is amazing, she manages somehow to say everything that she needs to say, and it’s so crazy, yet I can relate to most of what she’s saying.
What modern artists do you like? What's the music scene like in Ireland at the moment?
I’m very much into a new artist named Imogen Heap at the moment. She’s becoming more mainstream through having her music played on The OC but her album “Speak For Yourself” is fantastic. It’s a mixture of Pop, Rock and Electronica – actually the style that I’m most interested in right now. I also love two American rock bands called Nada Surf and Death Cab For Cutie. They’re without doubt the most played bands on my iPod. Right now in Ireland, the charts contain a lot of edgy pop songs. Pure pop to an extent doesn’t sell all that well anymore, like Rachel Stevens for instance, but the likes of the Sugababes are still doing well thanks to their clever pop songs. And then there’s Pussycat Dolls, Black Eyed Peas, that sort of thing. It wouldn’t be my cup of tea but I respect what they do and they do it very well. There’s quite a few singer-songwriters on the scene here at the moment too. I think people are finally realising that the charts simply can’t go on to be filled with you know, five X Factor contestants every time there’s a new season.
If you could choose to record a song with any other artist/band alive or dead who would it be and why?
Dido. Without doubt…I would love to write and record a song together. She just blows my mind. I know so many people call her “bland” and “middle of the road” but they’re referring to the genre of easy listening. It isn’t made to dance to in clubs. It’s for your living room, but that doesn’t mean the music and the lyrics aren’t quality.
What inspires you to write your music/lyrics?
I become inspired at the most inconvenient times. It started at school…I’d be walking home in the rain reflecting and all of a sudden I’d have a lyric embedded in my brain. Now I could be out having drinks with friends and I’m only short of saying, “excuse me, I have to go write a new song now”. Sometimes relationships and issues that my friends are going through inspire me, and sometimes it’s things that are going on in my own life. I find that the best time for me to write is when I’m feeling really strongly about something. That’s when I have something to say. I’ll never sit down and try to write, or pick a topic to write about. It just doesn’t work like that at all.
Name your all time fave track by another artist?
”I Can’t Make You Love Me” by George Michael. It’s perfect. The music sets the mood, and the lyric is so convincing. I zone out when I hear that song. That’s the way I want to touch people with my songs – and that’s why I feel the need to be nothing but completely honest when I’m writing. No cover-ups, no clichés, just be real.
What sort of sound can we expect from your forthcoming album? Have you had any good reviews yet?
I started recording this album in August last year (2005) and the sound I was going for was Acoustic Pop, but since then I’ve been listening to a lot more American Rock like Death Cab For Cutie, so I want to incorporate elements of that sound, together with subtle Electronica – think William Orbit’s work on Madonna’s Ray Of Light. I want the sort of album that you can have in the background to a dinner-party, the sort you can drive to, and most importantly the sort you can sit and listen to whilst doing nothing in your bedroom. Hotpress ran a good review for my song “Ten Years Time”. Usually the magazine, which is huge in Ireland, is quite harsh on artists. When I heard my publicist at the time had sent the track in to be reviewed, I was a nervous wreck. I wanted my first review to be positive and I expected Hotpress would slate me, but to my delight they said that I was a “top honours singer-songwriter”, and compared it to Ben Folds. I was astonished. I couldn’t have asked for a better review from a magazine of its calibre.
What are your ambitions for your music? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I want to establish myself as a respected and well-known artist. In five years I would hope to have released at least two proper studio albums. I see a lot of relatively new artists who leave three and four years between their album releases. I understand this with artists who have been around for several years, but I think I’d feel the need to keep up the pace once I’d had success. I’d also like to write for other artists, and to have my music used on a soundtrack would be nice. I would like to have toured globally, at least in the UK and Ireland, and Europe. Whether I was playing arenas, theatres or pubs, it wouldn’t bother me. I just want the chance to perform my music, and to have an audience listen willingly.
How would you describe your music and what genre do you think it fits into?
My music stylistically borrows from lots of different genres. I like the Electronica and Pop fusion, like All Saints “Black Coffee” and Madonna’s “Ray Of Light” album, hints of this can be heard in my music, where I’ve used keyboards together with a live band, to create some conflict and have something interesting happening. The songs are solid Pop-Rock songs – they have the real instruments and organic production of Rock music, but at the core you will find a catchy Pop melody. People have said there are traces of Soul in some of my tracks too.
Where is your forthcoming album being recorded and who is producing?
It’s all a work in progress. So far I’ve recorded everything in Dublin, Ireland. I’ve recorded demos with lots of producers, but most of those will probably never see the light of day! I recorded a track with Billy Farrell, who has worked with The Corrs on a number of occasions, and that will certainly make the album, as will my first single, which was produced by Steve Hogan and Fionan DeBarra. I’m working again with Steve and Fionan on more tracks for the album. We work well together; we all bring something to each track. Steve is relatively new to production, but comes from a musical background, having been a drummer for a great number of years, so that’s a plus. He’s played with everyone from Damien Rice to LeAnn Rimes. Fionann has worked with Moya Brennan from Clannad on her solo material, and he’s the main producer on her new album. He’s a very talented guy, and I can see us working together in the future. I’m keeping my options open to working with other producers too, but I don’t want to work with too many different people – I don’t want the album to sound confused and lack continuity. I have a clear vision of the album I want to create.

This shouldn't really be our cup of tea, but O'Connor emerges from this issue's singer-songwriter crop with top honours. Featuring a gentle piano, cello and acoustic backing, it's an almost identikit Ben Folds copy (especially the vocal) yet still works well, maybe for that very fact.
